Originally developed in conjunction with Fuji and Olympus the Xd memory card offers a great alternative of storage medium compared to other types of memory card unit on the market. Unlike other types of card these were designed primarily for use with digital cameras and camcorders under the Olympus or Fuji brand, but are now being offered as an alternative on many various other electronic devices.

If you have a device that is compatible with these type of card you will find they allow for lower power consumption and rapid transfer speeds for both your video and photo needs. On the market today you will most commonly find 2 variations of Xd memory card available for purchase, these include the M range and M+ range of cards.

Difference between M & M+ Xd cards

Way back in 2006 fuji released there type M range to positive reviews. Allowing you to store up to 2gb data, at the time these cards were considered to be the best on the market in terms of portable storage. One drawback of the M rage was that although storage was adequate, read and write speeds were considered to be slow compared to the very first Xd cards prior to 2005.

Between 2008 & 2009 fuji developed a new range known as the M+. These cards allowed for lower manufacturing costs, up to 2gb worth of storage and more importantly faster read and write times compared to the standard M range of cards. At this moment in time there is no Xd memory card available that allows you to store more than 2gb of data, but this may change in future.

Should you purchase an Xd memory card?

Currently the Sd card variation of cards are the most affordable and offer flexible storage capacities to suit consumers needs. Xd memory units are known for there great reliability and unique functions they provide when used in conjunction with an Olympus or fuji branded product. If you already have a Fuji or Olympus product then I would recommend purchasing this type of card to get the most from your device. If you have a choice between Xd and other memory units then I would consider the other types before hand. This by no means means Xd memory units are not worth investing in to, it's just more affordable to purchase a larger size Sd card variation for example compared to a 2gb Xd card.
